Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, undergraduate and graduate students were asked to judge whether they knew a given English word over several days, and changes in brain activity were measured using a cost-effective electroencephalograph. The results showed that the brain responses to easy and difficult English words differed in the theta and beta bands, and that the brain responses to difficult English words memorized by the participants became similar to that of easy English words after 10 days of English word presentation.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究で行った実験は、2秒間呈示される英単語に対してその意味を知っているかを判断し、その後の2秒間で英単語の意味を日本語で２秒間呈示するという、非常に簡単なものである。一回の実験では一つの単語は一度しか呈示されないので、一つの英単語に対する学習時間は、日本語で提示された意味の時間を含めても9日間の実験で合計40秒弱と極めて短い。しかし、実験結果は、このような短時間の呈示であっても回数を重ねることで徐々に記憶されていくこと、それに対応して脳波も徐々に変わることを示している。したがって、本研究の結果は、分散学習の有用性を脳波という客観的な証拠と共に示している。
