Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study was to develop an Internet addiction prevention program focused on cognitive factors (thinking styles) for youth. First, a survey of approximately 1,000 college students indicated that day/night reversal tendencies and stress promote gaming addiction. Next, a survey of approximately 2,000 elementary and junior high school students indicated that 7.3% of the total respondents were above the Cutoff value for gaming addiction, and that cognitions that promote dependence include anxiety about friendships and perceived effectiveness of games in reducing stress. Based on these findings, a lesson plan was developed to expand the repertoire of in-game friendships and stress coping skills, and was implemented in two elementary and two junior high schools.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
