海洋プレートの沈み込み開始時における断層弱化機構を明らかにするべく、愛媛大学地球深部ダイナミクス研究センターおよび大型放射光施設（SPring-8）に設置された変形DIA装置を用いて人工かんらん岩試料の熱水変形実験を行った。実験条件は温度500-580℃、圧力2.5 GPa、含水量4-30 wt.%であった。研究成果の概要は以下の通りである。
1. かんらん岩試料の最大差応力（強度）は約0.5-1.0 GPaの範囲であった。
2. 単純剪断実験において、試料には剪断歪の増加にしたがってB面、R1面、Y面からなる複合面構造が発達した。それらの剪断帯（幅10 μm以下）内には含水鉱物の一種である蛇紋石が加水反応に起因して生成していた。
3. 反応生成物である蛇紋石について、ラマン分光分析を実施したところ、アンチゴライトとリザーダイトの中間的なスペクトルを示した。
4. 実験後のかんらん石粒子について結晶方位解析を行った。その結果、c軸が剪断方向に平行で、b軸が剪断面に垂直に配向するBタイプのファブリックをもつことが明らかになった。
