Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
As the first year of this research project, focusing on the roles on NGO in the provision of housing and support for disaster-affected people in the United States and Indonesia, research activities mainly consisted of gathering information and gaining background knowledge on policies and precedents in both countries, as well as the national and local contexts for housing damage and recovery planning in the metropolitan areas of Houston, Texas in the United States, and Palu City in Sulawesi, Indonesia. In addition, review of existing plans and housing recovery planning process for the Houston area after Hurricane Harvey, and the Palu area after Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami were reviewed.
For both cases, progress was made in understanding the local context of each site, the current programs related to housing provision by government and non profits, and the status of their implementation. Towards building research counterpart relationship for carrying out the next steps of this research, research meetings held with with experts familiar with each case, and local research counterparts. A site visit to Houston included exchange with local academics and non-profit stakeholders.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to the Novel Corona Virus, the first site visit to Palu, in Sulawesi, Indonesia planned for March 2020 had to be postponed. To compensate for this, research on the Palu case has focused on gathering information from research counterparts within Indonesia, and desk review.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the current year, the research will be carried out in general according to the plan as much as possible. However, as the Novel Corona Virus has led to a situation in which international travel may be difficult for some time, research activities in the first part of this year will continue to focus on gathering information as much as possible from desk review, including an analysis of the existing documentation of housing recovery plans for both cases, and the local projects of NGOs. International field surveys will be conducted when the conditions for international travel become safe.
