Labuta Jan  国立研究開発法人物質・材料研究機構, 国際ナノアーキテクトニクス研究拠点, 主任研究員 (00720690)

Project Period (FY) 2019-04-01 – 2022-03-31
KeywordsChirality / Porphyrin / Physical chemistry / NMR imaging
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Chirality is one of the key topics in modern chemical sciences, and its analysis, sensing or discrimination is essential in several fields, including pharmaceutical sciences, molecular recognition, asymmetric catalysis, etc.
In FY2020, we have shown two porphyrin-type and one Zinc metal-ligand complex systems as enantiomeric purity sensors. These findings, to our surprise, show that the pro-CSA mechanism is further extendible to more exotic molecules such as metal-ligand coordination complexes.
We have also shown that porphyrin-type molecules can be used as effective hydrogen-bond donor organocatalysts (for sulfa-Michael additions, Henry and aza-Henry reactions) with excellent yields and recyclability.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The research plan is in progress as scheduled. However, some rearrangements had to be made regarding the planned 3D NMR measurements at the collaborating institution (Charles University, Czech Republic) due to the unprecedented covid-19 situation.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In FY2021, we plan to perform the FY2020 postponed 3D NMR experiments. In FY2020, series of water-soluble porphyrins were synthesized and in FY2021 will be tested for chirality sensing, catalytic activity and self-assembly properties.

Causes of Carryover

Due to the covid-19 situation in FY2020, the two planned measurement sessions (at Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic) were postponed to this fiscal year (i.e. the two business trips were postponed). Therefore, the transferred money will be used this fiscal year for travel expenses.
