Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The transpareny change of flower petals has been successfully implemented in a biomimetic manner in porous thin films of a fluorinated polymer. The mechanism of the transparency change in the flower was elucidated using SEM and fluorecence micrsocopy. Air-filled spaces in the leaves can be filled with water, leading to the transparent state. Using a solvent exchange process in which a spin coated film of a solution of a fluorinated polymer was immersed in a non-solvent, porous polymer films were produced that show the same white-to-transparent optical change, which is completely reversible.
