Pyrazine-boron complexes, bis(pyrrol-2-yl)squaraines and 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole dyes were synthesized as a novel fluorescent dye. In the pyrazine boron complex, boron complexes having bulky substituents on the boron atom tended to show a higher fluorescence quantum yield in the solid state. 1,3-Squaraines showed red-shifted maximum fluorescence wavelength compared to the corresponding 1,2-squaraines. Unsymmetrical 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole showed a very large Stokes shift (230 nm) due to TICT fluorescence.
