Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, it was found that the antibacterial effect of Bacillus natto against Campylobacter spp. differed in effectiveness depending on the strain. Antimicrobial efficacy was judged in two ways: intensity and stability, but the efficacy differed depending on the strain. This result suggested that antimicrobial materials differed among strains. Furthermore, the B. natto strain with high antimicrobial efficacy was fed to mice and its antimicrobial effect on Campylobacter spp. in the intestine was observed. In addition, the intestinal bacterial flora changed significantly before and after the B. natto feeding. However, there was no effect on mouse health. These results suggest that some strains of B. natto may have significant antibacterial activity against intestinal Campylobacter spp.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ヒトに対する健康食品として広く知られている納豆菌と畜産業界で長年用いてきた生菌剤に対して、新しい知見・技術開発を提示した。これまでに生菌剤として納豆菌を用いた研究は幾つかあるが、増殖抑制効果の高い納豆菌種の選別や増殖抑制効果の比較、腸内での効果、投与/非投与状態での腸内フローラを明示した例はなかった。
本研究では、カンピロバクター属菌に対して効果の高い納豆菌の選抜だけでなく、腸内での抗菌効果や投与による腸内細菌叢への影響を調べた。その結果、ある種の納豆菌は腸内のカンピロバクター属菌の増殖を特異的に抑制するが、実験動物健康へは影響しないことを示した。
