Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In recent years, tick-borne viral infections have become one of the global public health problems. In Japan, unknown viruses carried by ticks may cause new infectious diseases. In this study, we showed that a novel Thogotovirus (WT-THOV) isolated from ticks collected in Kyoto in 2013 infects wild animals such as raccoons. It also caused lethal lesions in hamsters. On the other hand, WT-THOV did not show pathogenicity in mice. However, 20 consecutive THOV infections in mice (MA-THOV) caused lethal infections in mice. These results demonstrate that THOV is pathogenic to mammals.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
