Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In Japan, blanket dry cow therapy (BDCT) is used to control mastitis in dairy cows during dry-off. Recently, selective dry cow therapy (SDCT) has been studied in other countries from the viewpoint of antimicrobial resistance. In this study, we examined the rate and efficacy of antimicrobial use during dry-off in dairy cows in Japan, the criteria for deciding whether antimicrobials are needed, and the effectiveness of teat disinfectants as an alternative to antimicrobials in controlling mastitis. The results suggest that the standards for antimicrobial use in dry cows used in the Netherlands can be used in Japan, and that the use of teat disinfectants is as effective as BDCT in controlling mastitis, and that SDCT can be introduced in Japan.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
