Outline of Final Research Achievements

This project aims to illustrate how tanaidaceans obtained the dwarf males. Through taxonomical, phylogenetical, and morphological approaches and rearing experiments, this project provided a robust phylogenetic tree for Tanaidacea, described several new species, and illustrated sexual and reproductive aspects of several tanaidaceans, suggesting that dwarf males may be produced by simpler developmental pathways than expected.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

矮小なオス，つまり矮雄は様々な動物群で知られるが，タナイス類の矮雄は，雌雄ともに生涯を通じて分散能力がとても低い動物群における矮雄の例として興味深い存在である．本研究期間中，分類学的，系統学的，形態学的研究，飼育実験を実施した．その結果，タナイス目内の高次分類群間の信頼性の高い系統樹を作成したほか，複数の未記載種と複数種の性表現に関する記載を行い，タナイス目における矮雄が，従来考えられていたほど特殊な発生経路を経ない可能性があることを明らかにした．
