Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study aims to reveal functions as well as origin of macrophages in peripheral nerve. Peripheral nerve macrophages were demonstrated as the tissue-resident macrophages. For functional analysis of peripheral nerve macrophages, gene manipulation system was also established. By using this technique, some differences between peripheral nerve macrophages and monocyte-derived macrophages were found.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

中枢神経系のマクロファージであるミクログリアは近年急速に機能が明らかになってきているのに対し、末梢神経内に存在するマクロファージは機能がほぼ不明である。本研究で確立した末梢神経内マクロファージ特異的な遺伝子操作技術や細胞除去技術は、今後の機能解明に有用であると考えられる。また、本研究で見出された神経損傷時における末梢神経内マクロファージと血中単球由来マクロファージの相違点は、末梢神経損傷や神経因性疼痛の治療法開発の基礎になることが期待される。
