Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, we performed a comprehensive genetic analysis that combines whole-genome gene expression analysis data with genome-wide association study data of high myopia in a Japanese population and identified several susceptibility genes and pathogenic pathways for high myopia. These findings can lead to deepen the understanding of the pathophysiology of myopia and high myopia.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の遺伝情報は、近視および強度近視の病態の全容解明の一助になることが期待される。また、本研究の成果は、近視を対象とした遺伝子診断の基礎情報となることが期待される。より有効な近視の遺伝子診断が可能になれば、重度の視力低下につながる強度近視の早期予防が可能となり、本人に与える医学的価値は大変高いと考えられる。さらに、本研究の成果は、近視の発症・進行予防薬の新規開発にもつながり、その医学的意義は大変高いと考えられる。
