Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the proposed research plan, the blood sample will be collected from the children under five years of age at the urban and rural hospitals of Western Kenya. Therefore, I had visited two hospitals in Western Kenya in FY2019; one is Homa Bay County Referral Hospital, which is the main referral hospital. Another is Mbita Sub County Hospital, which is located in a rural area. Both hospitals agreed to involve in this research work and provide children's blood samples. Subsequently, I and the co-investigator prepared an ethical document to use the human sample and submitted it to the ethical committee, which is under scrutiny.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
1. In FY2019, research location (hospitals) selection, and technical staff selection has been completed. 2. Planning for the sample collection from the field and transfer to the research lab has been completed. 3. Both the principal investigator (Shah Mohammad) and co-investigator (Satoshi Kaneko) prepared the ethical document, and that has been submitted to Kenya Medical Research Institute. All the initial preparation has been completed in FY2019. Therefore, it is in progress.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During getting ethical approval, I am in the process of hiring technical staff and preparing the purchase of reagents.
|
Causes of Carryover |
In this research project, we will collect childrens blood samples and use their health and other information; therefore, both the principal investigator (Dr. Shah) and co-investigator (Dr. Kaneko) prepared the ethical documents very carefully because it is a very sensitive issue. Also, the Kenyan governments ethical committee is checking all documents very strictly. Therefore getting ethical approval has been delayed slightly. But there is no obstacle for conducting the research. After getting ethical approval, we can start research work immediately. Therefore, the FY2019 budget will be used in FY2020.
