Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In FY2020, ethical approval was granted from Nagasaki University and Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) to start the study in Kenya. Also, necessary reagents (malaria rapid test kit, bacterial identification kit, plastic consumables, etc.) were prepared for collecting the blood sample from children under five years old to determine the invasive bacterial infections and their association with severe malaria.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

For the continuation of the proposed research, ethical approval is required before starting the field research work. In FY2020, ethical approval was granted from Nagasaki University and Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). Also, reagents and necessary research materials were purchased for research work. All the initial preparation has been completed. Therefore, it is in progress.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Blood and stool samples will be collected from hospitalized children less than five years old age at the urban and rural hospitals of Western Kenya. All human specimens will be transported and analysed at the Nairobi lab.

Causes of Carryover

To prepare and get ethical approval required time. In FY2020, ethical approval was received from Nagasaki University and Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) to start the study in Kenya. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, beginning the research experiment has been slightly delayed because the patient’s admission rate significantly reduced. Also, for lockdown, both international and domestic traveling was hampered. Therefore, the previous year's budget will be used in FY2021.
