Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
We are in the last phase of the study. The first achievement is the creation of a novel method to automate the indentification of wind trajectories originated from deserts in China and Mongolia. Second, we have submitted preliminary results to the 34th Annual Conference of International Society for Environmental Epidemiology. Third, a indirect but related achievement is the publication of a book chapter about air pollution and climate change. For the first achivement, although the process was automated, it was time consuming because of the high frequency of daily trajectory analysis covering multiple years for four study locations. The process is now completed. We will proceed to the final part of model checking, report writing, and article submission in the new fiscal year.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
We met an unexpected delay due to (1) the extra time needed to perform the backward trajectory analysis of air mass movement (HYSPLIT), and (2) the extra time needed to merge the results of aerosol maps and trajectory analyses, and check their consistency for dust identification by overseas collaborator. For the first reason, we had implemented a novel method to automate the process, but the daily trajectory analysis was still time consuming and computational intensive due to the high frequency of daily analyses for multiple years from 2011-2017 for four study areas (Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan). For the second reason, the work timeline which includes overseas collaboration was slightly delayed by COVID-19 situation.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
We aim to complete all statistical modeling and checking by May 2022. We will prepare the first draft of manuscript in June 2022, and submit by July 2022. We also plan to present our findings at conferences, namely, 34th Annual Conference of International Society for Environmental Epidemiology in September 2022 and annual meeting of Japan Epidemiological Association in January 2023.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The unused amount was because we were not able to attend the two annual meetings as originally planned since we did not have the final results due to the unexpected delay as explained above. We plan to use the amount for the 34th Annual Conference of International Society for Environmental Epidemiology in September 2022, annual meeting of the Japan Epidemiological Association in January 2023, and article publication fee.
