Project Period (FY) 2019-04-01 – 2024-03-31
KeywordsAsian Dust / Particulate Matter / Air Pollution / Transboundary / Mortality / Remote Sensing
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

We have completed the preliminary data analysis which encompasses four cities in East Asia (Beijing, Seoul, Fukuoka, and Taipei). We have submitted an abstract to the 35th Annnual Conference of International Society for Environmental Epidemiology (ISEE) which will be held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. In addition, we have submitted a second abstract related to the methodology of our work to the 2023 International Conference on CMAS-Asia-Pacific, which will be held in Saitama, Japan in July 17-21, 2023. The second abstract has been accepted for poster presentation.
A study abstract related to the current work was accepted for oral presentation at the 34th Annual Conference of ISEE in Athens, Greece, on 19 September 2022.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The research is currently progressing as expected. With the preliminary results, we are now able to draft a manuscript and plan for submission. The delay in the current schedule was due to technical challenges in statistical modeling. This and the previous delay related to data preparation (backward trajectory analysis using HYSPLIT and aerosol maps checking) and the rescheduled timeline of overseas collaboration due to COVID-19 have contribued to the slow down. Further details are provided in the previous progress report.
In March 2023, a collaborator from Spain was able to visit my department in the University of Tokyo which had helped advance the current research as planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

We are now requesting feedback based on the preliminary results and will perform additional analyses if requested by May 2023. We will then finalize the manuscript draft by July 2023 and circulate for further feedback. We plan to submit the manuscript in the same month.
We will present our findings at the International Conference on CMAS-Asia-Pacific to be held in Saitama, Japan in July 2023. Also, if accepted, we will present out findings at the 35th Annual Conference of International Society for Environmental Epidemiology to be held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, in September.
We plan to continue expanding the current work beyond the four cities in East Asia, to include more cities affected by other deserts in other regions. Currently, we are exploring method to automatize the detection of dust events using reanalysis data on Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) provided by the Navy Aerosol Analysis and Prediction System (NAAPS).

Causes of Carryover

The unused amount was because we were not able to physically attend the international conference in Greece (only participated virtually), and a local conference affected by a delay in technical analysis. As a result, we did not incur the article publication fee. This amount will be used for one international and local conference, as well as publication fee as planned.
