Outline of Annual Research Achievements

During this research period, activities included academic panels, workshops, fieldwork, publication of research results, and on-going manuscript writing.

The year began with a panel at the 4th World Small-scale Fisheries Congress, Asia-Pacific region (4WFC) which brought local fisheries commoners to speak about their experiences and activities in their own words. In the autumn, a special international workshop was also held jointly with Swedish researchers which also focused on the data and lessons learned from the fisheries commons case study. On-going work includes discussions with stakeholders for collaboration in future projects.

For the publications in the fisheries, on-going and follow-up interviews were conducted along with participant observation in the field for the inclusion of additional empirical data. Publications in the forestry case studies continued with a book, articles, and essays.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

4: Progress in research has been delayed.

Reason

Current status includes finalizing research activities, finalizing writing, and planning the final, closing workshop.

The closing workshop, which will include finalizing final publications, was delayed due to the COVID19 pandemic impacting our project's international colleague first being unable to travel to Japan, and then having difficulty finding an opening in her calendar due to the changed timeline. Dates have now been set for early September with the travel agent engaged for international tickets, so the final activities will take place at last.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The project is in its final stage. Thus, current plans are to 1) conduct final, follow up interviews with stakeholders for finalizing publications; and 2) hold our closing workshop in Miyagi Prefecture. The workshop, which will be attended by all project partners, will include field visits to fisheries commoners.

The workshop will also include time to discuss final publications, presentations this year, and future project proposal writing.

Causes of Carryover

Due to the COVID19 pandemic, and the pressure on calendars as a result of that pandemic stopping planned research and meetings, the project's international workshop was greatly delayed. This workshop will now finally take place in September of 2023. The remaining budget will be spent on travel for the workshop, as well as the fieldtrip connected with the workshop. The last of the funds will be spent on publications and final meetings with various stakeholders to provide research results and thank them for their participation.
