Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2020-21, the project has been strongly delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic and its impacts. I have continued with some desk research and gathering some data and cases for possible inclusion in the project, however an essential next step in the research is a substantial field trip, or possibly two trips (if the timing of travel and my teaching commitments preclude a single, lengthier trip). The research has only been able to progress slightly as a result of the delay in my fieldwork plans, as the research has reached a point where primary interviews, - especially the checking information that is not publicly available and some of which is politically sensitive - has become essential, and cannot be satisfactorily conducted online. I have begun drafting an initial occasional paper that lays out the basic theoretical arguments of the paper, which I am planning to publish through a major scholarly outlet in the Gulf (Georgetown University in Doha, Qatar); I began drafting this late in 2020-21 and I am hoping to be able to submit it in the coming months.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The bulk of the project has been unavoidably delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic; although I have been able to conduct some further desk research on the topic, I have not been able to complete any field research, which is an essential next step in the research for the project. I am currently drafting a paper that presents some key initial arguments, based predominantly on secondary sources, but after this is submitted, I will have to await an ability to travel to the Gulf states to progress and deepen the research further.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The next stage of the research is a detailed field trip to several Gulf states (possibly conducted over two trips, if the timing of travel and my teaching commitments preclude a single, lengthier trip). This is essential for: the gathering of additional primary data; the collection of personal observations and anecdotes by key commercial and state actors in the region; and for testing my theories against the impressions and experiences of actors in the region. I am hoping that at least some of this fieldwork can be completed in 2021-22, however this will depend upon how events and government policies in Japan and the Gulf unfold with the current Covid-19 pandemic.
