Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year my research focus was on gathering additional primary data on state-owned firms in the Gulf, to use as supporting material in publications. Data was gathered on the 10 largest wholly state-owned firms and on the top 30 listed firms that also have some government ownership. For this I engaged a research assistant to help me, for 15 hours per week over Oct 2021 - Mar 2022. I also conducted some additional secondary research, particularly in refining an international relations aspect of the research. I published one article this year based on earlier research conducted thanks to this grant, and also drafted two other articles, both due to be published later in 2022.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
Although I have either published or have in preparation several article-length academic pieces, the project remains at an impasse, hampered by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and especially by travel restrictions in Years 2 and 3 of the project. This has precluded me from undertaking fieldwork in the Arab Gulf states, which is necessary for me to advance the research further, and especially essential if I am still to be able to do a book-length piece of work on the topic. It is unlikely that I will be able to travel until either the end of 2022 or spring 2023, making an additional extension to the grant essential if the work is to progress further and as originally planned in the application.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
This report is for the third year of three of the project, and I am currently entering the fourth year (an extension approved in early 2022). As noted, the next major step in the research is to undertaken fieldwork, which requires me to spend to 3-4 weeks minimum in several Arab Gulf states to gather data, impressions from policymakers, case studies, and other material not available in secondary sources. Between travel restrictions, my teaching schedule, and other factors, spring 2023 is likely to be the earliest that a trip of this length and complexity could be undertaken. My plan is to apply for a further one-year extension to the project - given the tremendous disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic - which would allow fieldwork in early 2023 and then the remainder of 2023, and later if necessary, to analyze and prepare publications from that fieldwork.

Causes of Carryover |
Remaining funds are planned to be used for an academic conference, to check my theoretical thinking and gain feedback on it), and for fieldwork in the case study countries in early 2023.
