Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
After delays in the research due to the Covid pandemic, I conducted further research work in 2022. This included some additional desk research, and then a field trip to Oman, the UAE, and Qatar in early 2023, where I interviewed policy experts, businesspeople, and scholars to refine my ideas on state capitalism, economic reform, and development plans in these countries. I also published one book chapter based on research from the project, and wrote three more which are now in press, one to appear later in 2023 and two in 2024.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The project is starting its final year (including a total of two one-year extensions), delayed due to the Covid pandemic. I am trying to catch up with the time lost over 2020-22 but the project remains delayed compared to initial plans.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The fieldwork in early 2023 assisted greatly, including in feeding into publications that have been drafted or revised in recent months. I am planning another research trip towards the end of the current year (either over the new year or, preferably, in February-March 2024: this should give me further research material, including case studies and other insights, to build into further publications. I am currently trying to decide whether to prepare a book-length manuscript specifically on the state capitalism concept, or whether to build the state capitalism ideas into a broader work on the political economies of the Gulf states.

Causes of Carryover |
