| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year my research focus was on three main activities: collating and assessing material gathered on fieldwork in early 2023; gathering additional primary data, especially the details of state-owned and semi-state-owned firms; and beginning the dissemination process for some of the research findings thus far. I also conducted some additional secondary research, particularly in refining the comparative political economy aspect of the research. Dissemination included drafting or refining several publications drawing on the research results: three research articles/chapters were published in 2023 that drew on the research, with a further piece in press and scheduled to appear later in 2024.

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Although I have now published multiple pieces that would not have been possible without this JSPS grant, the project was severely hampered by the Covid-19 pandemic and my inability to do detailed fieldwork earlier in the process. As a result, I have abandoned my initial plans for a book-length manuscript specifically on the state capitalism concept, but now intend to prepare a more theory-centered book in the coming years (hopefully during sabbatical in 2025-2026) which combines the state capitalism research done under this project with associated ideas that I have developed on rentierism and economic statecraft.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I hope to still supplement my theoretical and desk research with further, detailed fieldwork in the Gulf states in either late 2024 or after the project ends in 2025. As noted, I hope that this will lead to a book or similar manuscript that combines the focus of this project with associated ideas I have developed in the research process.
