Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research is a reexamination of the history and culture of medieval Japanese funerary rites from an East Asian Buddhist perspective. It has been argued that the research of funerary rites was influenced by the Zen Buddhism of the Kamakura period (the origin of which is the Zen culture of the Song dynasty). In this context, this study uses the case of Sennyu-ji Temple, which entered the Song dynasty in the same period as Zen monks and practiced Song dynasty Vinaya and Tiantai, and empirically discusses the various aspects of the acceptance by other sects and temples of the Sennyu-ji school of Song dynasty manners, funeral rites, lifestyle and culture. This research is an attempt to revise the previous studies by demonstrating the influence of "Jiangnan Buddhism of the Song Dynasty" that was shared not only by the Zen sect but also by the Ritsu and Kyo sects.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
