Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research explored how Uta-kotoba (歌ことば) and Hoi (本意) were formed and expanded from the early to the middle of Heian period employing Waka expressions that had been applied before the creation of "Kokinshu". Compound verbs consist of a combination of proceeding and following verbs, and compound verbs can create new expression by changing the preceding and following verbs. In particular, Henjo created expressions employing relatively common words. Moreover, words preceding "Koku(扱く)" were often employed in Waka. Employing "Kokimazu (扱き混ず)" in Waka became popular during Engi time. The compound verbs that went through such progress expanded their positions rather than just mere expressions. As a result, they were characterized as Uta-kotoba.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

和歌は言語芸術であり、歌において歌人たちが創出した複合動詞は芸術的営為の発露とみることができる。ただ、和歌に見える複合動詞に着目した研究は、日本語学の側からのものが圧倒的に多い。また、日本語学における複合動詞の研究でも、韻文としての特質を重視せずに和歌表現を用例として取り上げるものが散見される。本研究は、和歌に見られる複合動詞を和歌文学と日本語学の両側面から取り上げたものである。この点に本研究の学術的意義が見出される。
