Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Despite the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic, this research has produced further valuable results. First, I delivered a well-received paper at The 93rd English Literary Society of Japan General Meeting, Waseda University. Second, I completed a book chapter, ‘The Sound-World of Early Medieval England: A Case Study of the Exeter Book Storm Riddle’, which will be published in the volume Ideas of the World in Early Medieval England. I have a major article, ‘Sonic Journeys on the Deep Ocean: Testing the Faithful in Old English and Anglo-Latin Literature’ currently under review with the journal The Review of English Studies. Based on the research done during this year, I am scheduled to give a paper at the upcoming International Medieval Congress at Leeds University.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
My research has continued to face delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as travel to the UK from Japan has only recently become feasible. I have received electronic assistance from several archives which has helped somewhat in this regard. As I have received an extension for this project, I am looking forward to taking a single longer research trip to the UK to complete my archival work.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Thanks to the generous extension, my future plans are as follows: 1. Give the following conference papers: ‘Sounding the World: Biophony and Geophony in Old English and Old Norse literature’, The 94th English Literary Society of Japan General Meeting, Doshisha University. ‘Knowing Ocean(s): Borders and Boundaries, from Surface to Seafloor’, International Medieval Congress, Leeds University. 2. Utilizing feedback from those conferences complete the following article for submission to the journal Speculum: ‘Sounding Waters: The Ocean in Old English and Old Norse Literature’. 3. Conduct 1 extended research trip to the UK for manuscript analysis and field recording. 4. Using the above research, continue to prepare a draft of my second monograph, Early Medieval Soundscapes.
|
Causes of Carryover |
With the extension granted, I will be using the remaining funds to travel to the UK for a single extended research trip. I have left the remaining funds to by for travel, accommodation, and other expenses during that research trip.
