Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

The most significant delays that have occurred as a result of coronavirus can be broken down into two categories outlined in the grant application: 1) data collection; and 2) analysis, writing up.
1) A 2-week research trip to London and Trieste was planned for June 2020 before the onset of the pandemic. Week 1: research in British Library. Week 2: present findings at the XXVII International James Joyce Symposium hosted by the University of Trieste (scheduled for 15-19 June 2020, subsequently postponed till 2021).
2) Some minor delays to book orders especially have slowed the progress of turning data analysis into peer-reviewed publications.
In terms of the progress of the project overall, the articles and presentations outlined above are in line with my expectations for research output.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

For the period 2020-2021:
- At the time of writing, it is expected that the data-collection research (British Library) and presentation trip (University of Trieste) initially planned for 2020 (see above) will now go ahead in June 2021. The Symposium paper proposal has already been accepted.
- All other travel for the purposes of data collection or presenting findings will be put on hold until the situation allows for safe travel. Intensive primary and secondary research of authors included in this project will be extended during this period.
- Where possible, presentations may be delivered online.
- Funds may be used to access digitized resources, including newspaper holdings, where available. Digitized archives and holdings will also be accessed where available.

Causes of Carryover

The outstanding amount of 8,750円 will be added to the fund for scientific publications in the next fiscal year. There have been no significant changes to the status of grant in the past fiscal year, although some delays in acquiring scientific publications and to planned research trips and presenting research findings have been incurred owing to the coronavirus pandemic (see sections on Current Status and Planning for Future Work for more details).
