Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study examined how Modern Japanese poetry was influenced by Modern French poetry through translation focusing on Horiguchi Daigaku. The book, Ikoku jocho to shite no Horiguchi Daigaku (Horiguchi Daigaku and Exotic Atmosphere, Azusa OMURA, 2023), investigates the link between his role as a translator and his creative activity as a poet. It reveals that the writing of his poetry affected his translations in terms of a style, words and themes.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまで翻訳家としての堀口大學の役割は広く認識されてきたが、個々の翻訳テクストが日本近代文学に与えた影響に焦点が当てられることが多かった。このような背景において本研究は訳詩集や日本近代文学という大きな流れのなかで堀口の文学活動全体を捉えなおそうと試みた。本研究は堀口の詩歌が翻訳に与えた影響を分析し、堀口の翻訳活動の重要な側面としてモダニズム文学、新感覚派に影響を与えたといわれる仏作家ポール・モランの堀口訳についても詳細に分析するという新たな観点を持っている。これらにより、本研究は日本近代詩とフランス近代詩、及び日本モダニズム文学をめぐる議論について新しい視点を提供できたと考える。
