Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Audio and electroglottographic data was collected from 20 native Thai speaking participants in November 2019. This audio data was collected from a controlled recording of the speakers reading a list of words, as outlined in the project plan. From December 2019 to May 2020, the audio data was annotated by a team of research assistants. This annotation procedure is necessary in order to separate and label the parts of the sounds that correspond to vowels and consonants. Analysis of the vowels for pitch and voice quality can now be done following this annotation procedure.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The experiment in Thailand and the annotation process have proceeded on schedule as originally planned.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Regarding the Thai data, the next step will be to annotate the electroglottographic (EGG) data. The annotations already finished for the audio data can be applied to this data. Both EGG and audio data will then be analyzed for psychoacoustic roughness via a script in Matlab. Once these results are produced, they will be written up for presentation and publication at a conference in late 2020, as originally planned. Regarding the plan for Korean data collection, I will coordinate a plan to collect this data in South Korea in November 2020. If travel is not possible due to the pandemic, I will arrange to employ a researcher on site to collect the data in my stead.

Causes of Carryover |
Some equipment intended to be purchased was not needed (headphones were available on site, digital recorder was not needed). Additionally, plans for a 2019 domestic conference presentation were postponed due to the pandemic.
