Outline of Final Research Achievements

The current study focuses on the further development of modal expressions, especially the expansions towards connectives and discourse markers. Based on several case studies of Mandarin Chinese, the process and motivation of such expansions have been discussed from typological and constructional perspectives.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

モダリティとほかの文法カテゴリーの架け橋となる本研究は、これまでのモダリティの文法化研究に対する強力な補足であり、さらなる発展でもある。本研究によって、モーダル機能とほかの文法機能との連続性および共通基盤を解明し、モダリティの多機能性に対する認識をいっそう深めるのみならず、その背景にある人間の認知能力の発達の解明やモダリティの習得研究・教育に対しても重要な示唆を与えることができる。また、本研究は、印欧語中心であったモダリティの研究に積極的に中国語のデータを取り入れ、言語類型論研究におけるアジア言語からの重要性を示すものでもあると考える。
