Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The most recent research period was very fruitful. In the 2019-2020 period, I published four academic articles in the following journals: 1) the journal of second language pronunciation; 2) the international journal of applied linguistics, which was a co-authored paper; 3) the journal of english as a lingua franca; and 4) Asian Englishes. Furthermore, the article that was published in the international journal of applied linguistics made it to the "top-downloaded-paper" list of that journal, which indicates that it is having an impact on my field. In total, the four papers combine to demonstrate that second language phonology needs to head in a different direction, one which encompasses the idea that second language phonology is in need of a serious rethink. Before the Covid-19 pandemic started to shut down the international conferences that I usually attend, I was able to present on my findings at conferences at Waseda University, New Zealand, and America (UC Berkeley). But the grant money used for those projects have also been used on projects that are now ongoing. I am currently attempting to publish one of the studies that came out of this project, and I am in the process of writing another one as well.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The projects that I am engaged in have gone smoothly. Although the covid-19 pandemic has shut down international conferences and thus I cannot promulgate my research findings very easily, publishing of articles has not really been affected very much. I have published four academic articles in good journals during the research period, and I am also in the process of attempting to publish a fifth paper at the moment. I am also compiling data on a six paper that I hope to submit to a journal later this year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
For suture work, I plan on completing the process of publishing a fifth paper soon. This fifth article is under peer review at the journal of second language pronunciation right now. A sixth research project that will become a sixth paper is in the data collection process right now. Because of the covid-19 pandemic, I have cut off the data collection portion of the project early because it is unsafe to continue the experiment that the sixth project requires. However, we did gather enough data for non-parametric statistical analysis, so we have changed our initial plan to use an ANOVA on the data and have changed it to a non-parametric equivalent. For the foreseeable future, I do not think that I will attend any domestic or international conferences, but I do intend to keep sending articles into journals. One of the lucky aspects of the pandemic is that I have more time for writing the articles that I want to publish this year.

Causes of Carryover |
The Covid-19 pandemic made it nearly impossible to attend international conferences that had accepted my presentation proposals. My presentations had been accepted to both the AAAL conference in America and the ELF conference in Taiwan, but both conferences were cancelled due to health concerns. Had it not been for the covid-19 pandemic, I would have spent the entire research grant on attending those two conferences.
