| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year during the 1st semester I reviewed the literature on the topic, particularly how the brain processes language. In addition, I researched prior experimental studies that utilized an enactment approach to teaching a foreign language. I also created a small database of possible English phrasal verbs that could be used in this study. In the 2nd semester, I designed the material for the research. I developed material for 3 research conditions; teaching phrasal verbs through a first language; teaching phrasal verbs based on dual-coding, which requires pairing the verbs with images; and finally working with two student research assistants to produce video recordings of enacting the meaning of phrasal verbs. Finally, at the end of the year, I presented the research design, method, and materials at the 2020 JALT Hokkaido Language Teaching Conference.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The research has progressed smoothly this past year. I hired two student research assistants and we designed the video materials for the research. I also developed the image and language based materials. So I feel very comfortable that the materials are ready for the pilot study.
I put "rather" here mainly because I am a little uncertain about this years progress due to COVID-19. Since classes have now been switched to virtual classes, I cannot recruit students to participate in the pilot study. I am hoping that by autumn, I will be able to conduct a pilot study.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
My aim this year is conduct a pilot study to test out the materials and method for teaching these materials in the three different conditions, while maintaining consistency and control across them. I was hoping to do this 1st semester, but it appears that this will be postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Therefore, I am aiming to do this in the 2nd semester. I am also tentatively planning to present the results from this pilot study at JALT 2020 conference. Unfortunately, there seems to be considerable amount of uncertainty due to the global pandemic and it is rather difficult right now to accurately plan the research for this upcoming year.

I did not buy a book and therefore incurred this amount and will use it to buy one during this usage plan.
