Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
As a follow up to the first experiment I conducted on the enhancing effect of enactment on the learning of phrasal verbs in English, I designed a new experiment that examined the effect a short bout of exercise had on both short and long-term memory of phrasal verbs.
In two different time periods, I recruited a total of 37 participants to participate in this study. Each participant participated in 4 sessions each lasting 1 hour. In session 1, I explained the research, obtained consent from the participants, and they took a pre-test to measure phrasal verb knowledge. In sessions 2 and 3, students came to the lab in pairs and participated in two different learning conditions. In one session, one student participated in the sedentary condition (sitting and reading) and the other in an exercise condition (treadmill walking). They did this for a total of 20 minutes. Then filled in a mood questionnaire. Next, they learned a set of PVs. Finally, they took a post-test for these phrasal verbs. These roles were then reversed for the next session. In session 4, the participants took a delayed post-test a week after the experiment.
The results were presented at Japan's Association for Language Teaching International Conference in 2022. I also wrote a paper based on the results from the study and I submitted it to a journal in 2022 and is currently under review.
