Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During AY2021 I finalized my review of literature from language learning psychology (especially emotion/feelings and identity), humanistic education and psychology, and complexity theory. Based on the understandings of the analysis of emotions developed over the course of this project, I conducted analysis of specific cases of emotional significance for my learners from the pilot data collected in 2019. I was able to use an automatic transcription function in analysis software, and then homed in on these particular episodes to add human transcription. Rather than separating results into separate research articles, I was able to devote time to writing up the results of the research as a research monograph. I plan to publish this as an open access format to allow wide dissemination of the research findings. I have also presented results at various conferences (including being invited to speak as a plenary and featured speaker), to gain feedback from language teaching professionals and academics. Moreover, in order to foster discussion about the theoretical foundations of the study (complexity) and the methods (practitioner research), I was involved in a roundtable discussion (online) organized by the International Association for the Psychology of Language Learning and I organized an online symposium with speakers from Japan, Hong Kong and Britain, and attended by educators from around the globe.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Despite the current situation in the world with COVID-19, I was able to adapt the research in a mostly satisfactory fashion. Although I had initially planned to collect the main data in the 2020 and then 2021 academic year, this was not possible in the original classroom form. Instead, as noted above, I have made the primary data that collected in 2019 in a classroom setting. Additionally, while in the previous AY various conferences were postponed or cancelled, this year saw more chances for online presentation. That said, as i made the decision to write up the findings of the research in a monograph form rather than articles, the writing took longer than planned - hence the main dissemination of the research has been delayed to the 2022 academic year.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
While I had intended to investigate the potential of insights from data collected via online discussion sessions in 2020, this data was fundamentally different to the intention of the original research plan (classroom context). Hence, I have finished writing a research monograph based on the 2019-collected classroom data. This book is currently with a publisher, undergoing type-setting, and will be published early in AY2022. I will this work on revisions to this book when necessary, and use funds to publish open access. In addition, one of the conferences I had been accepted to present at (the Psychology in Language Learning conference) that was postponed will take place via an online medium in the summer, with other presentations planned. I also hope to organize another symposium either about emotions or practitioner research later in the year.

Causes of Carryover |
One of the main reasons for this amount being surplus concerns the fact that some of the academic conferences at which I had intended to present in 2021 were cancelled or postponed. Other conferences were changed to an online format, and hence incurred none of the expenses associated with traveling. However, as I decided that the best way to write up the findings from the research would be in a consolidated form as a research monograph, I deliberately set funds aside in order to be able to publish open access.
