Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The ultimate goal of this study is to find out which factor(s) of students' emotions (less anxiety and more enjoyment) improve their English proficiency. Because it is said that students' performance increases when they are less anxious (MacIntyre & Gardner, 1994), research on reducing students' anxiety has become mainstream. In recent years, the idea of positive psychology (humans also have positive emotion) (MacIntyre & Mercer, 2014) has been introduced and widely disseminated, stating that when students enjoy learning, they can reduce anxiety and improve performance. Since then, the research examining both emotions of anxiety and enjoyment simultaneously has become mainstream.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
Due to COVID-19, the experiment could not be conducted as planned. This was due to the fact that the schools under study applied year-round online classes. The questionnaire included items to measure students' anxiety and enjoyment when speaking English in pair/group work in the classroom. Therefore, data could not be collected last year. As a result, I could only give a presentation at a conference and write a manuscript for submission to a journal based on a pilot survey conducted in 2019.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I am considering to change the study design a little bit. I take a survey of students' motivation and self-confidence, in addition to the questionnaire of students' foreign language classroom anxiety and foreign language enjoyment. In addition, I write manuscripts for submission to journals.

Causes of Carryover |
In 2021, my research was not possible due to the coronavirus. Therefore, the request for a one-year extension was accepted, which is why the amount used in the next fiscal year arose. My plan this year is to carry out the research originally planned and to continue my efforts to publish papers.
