Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The purpose of the current research is to investigate the difference in the pattern of instruction between face-to-face (F2F) and computer-mediated interaction (CMI). The pilot-test revealed that second language learners of English performed similarly in terms of accuracy and complexity during their interaction with one another. The CMI yielded better fluency compared to F2F interaction. The reason for this difference could be a result of less anxiety during a CMI as the literature suggests. However, there were some indications that better fluency may have been a result of less interaction and more monologue from the participants. This suggests that a further investigation is needed to see the efficacy of the use of CMI.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The current research is progressing rather smoothly. Data for the pilot-test was obtained in early 2019 and was able to present its findings at the 58th JACET International Convention in Nagoya. 20 pairs of participants were recruited in the fall of 2019 and their data was collected. The voice recorded pair-work is currently being transcribed and analyzed. The number of pairs fell short of the initial plan, and it was planned to recruit eight more pairs during the spring of 2020. However, due to the novel coronavirus, it has become impossible to recruit new volunteers, thus self-evaluating the current status as "progressing rather smoothly."

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The data collected will continue to be analyzed this year. Eight more pairs of participants will be recruited for the research if it becomes possible before the summer. However, if the situation does not allow to do so, the main research will go on with the data that has been collected already. The plan is to present the findings in the fall if the situation allows, and submit a paper to a journal by next spring.

Causes of Carryover |
The reason for the incurring amount was that the initial plan of using a scanner to conduct a questionnaire was changed to be done online. So the budget to buy a scanner was not used. Some of this amount will be reallocated to pay assistants who will help transcribe the data.
