Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The current project tries to investigate the difference in the pattern of communication between face-to-face (F2F) and computer-mediated interaction (CMI). The transcribed data continue to show a better fluency score during the CMI than F2F similar to the pilot test data. The difference in fluency may be a result of less anxiety when interacting virtually. However, the participants interaction had less overlap during the CMI session compared to the F2F session. The utterances sounded like a monologue than an interaction, resulting in higher fluency. The data will continue to be analyzed for statistical and educational differences.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
The transcription of the audio files is finished. However, the analysis of the data is still ongoing. It is being analyzed and compared qualitatively for fluency, accuracy, and complexity in terms of participants utterances during the session between F2F interaction and CMI. The continued increase in the workload related to COVID-19 has made it difficult to conduct additional data collection, thus an additional qualitative analysis of the data is being planned.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
With the data transcribed, the plan is to analyze the data for fluency, accuracy, and complexity by the end of summer. Furthermore, qualitative analysis will be conducted to see if there are any subtle differences in the content spoken by the participants between F2F interaction and CMI. The finding will be presented in the winter and possibly submitting a paper to a journal in the future.

Causes of Carryover |
The majority of the budget was set aside for travel expenses for overseas conferences. However, the researcher did not take part in a conference because the analysis was not finished. Overseas travel will most likely not normalize by the end of the 2022 academic year. Thus, the incurring funds will be used to participate in domestic and international online conferences.
