Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2019 I was able to purchase most of the equipment needed to observe lessons as they are taught in order to study the connection between teacher and student motivation. I also attended several national and international conferences where I was able to present research on this topic and develop my theoretical framework which is used to develop further methods of inquiry. I have also done more library work and reading in order to develop a better understanding of my core concepts. In this respect, the first year progressed well, although several set-backs meant that I have so far not been able to actually conduct any observations yet. However, this is fine as I was originally planning that this year would be primarily for research and theorizing at this early stage.

Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
Initially I was supposed to go to Leeds university on sabbatical this year where I would work with leading scholars in the field of language motivation and practitioner research. This has been delayed due to the outbreak of coronavirus. Furthermore, as my study depends on observation of actual lessons being taught in person, there are expected to be more and further delays with the study. In fact I may have to redesign the way I collect much of my data and do this around interviews and questionnaires rather than classroom observations. At the moment I am just waiting to see what is possible.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
As explained above, I need to re-design aspects of the study so that I can collect different types of data which will still help me to understand about the nature of teacher and student motivation. My study focuses on classroom dynamics and face-to-face interactions and it will not be easy to research these things with the current lockdown situation. Furthermore, with my sabbatical overseas studies delayed I am currently thinking how I can get the time back that I have lost. My plan is to try to collaborate with the teachers at Leeds university via distance, although this is not the same as being at the university physically and access to resources is more limited.

Causes of Carryover |
This amount was left over due to a reduced length of stay in Osaka due to a typhoon. I would like to use the money in the next year to put towards further transport costs.
