Outline of Annual Research Achievements

My project has begun to recover after delays caused by the pandemic and inability to travel. I have re-designed my research to feature more introspective techniques so that I can collect data from my own classrooms. Last year I held a symposium at the International Applied Linguistics World Conference, as well as several other conference both international and within Japan (all online). I have also published two papers related to my research for this project, and several book chapters, many of which are co-authored with collaborators from overseas universities. However, I am still somewhat behind with the research and would like to extend the project if possible.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

I am catching up after the terrible delays caused by the pandemic which completely prevented me from going abroad for my sabbatical year. Last year was hard due to teaching demands, but I have begun gathering data and working on the project. This year I intend to catch up as fully as possible.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

As mentioned above, I have re-designed the research methods and narrowed the focus to feature more introspective techniques so that I can collect data from my own classrooms rather than obtruding on other’s. I am designing questionnaires and interviews rather than class-room observations of other teachers, and limiting the research focus.

Causes of Carryover

Due to the inability to travel internationally, many of the expected expenses were not incurred. Hopefully this year I will be able to use the remaining funds for travel, as originally intended.
