Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
While COVID-19 has impacted the study, the following has been achieved: 1.A study was conducted to analyse students’ perceptions of their own IC education and development since returning from a study abroad. 2.Another study has been designed to investigate how coordinators facilitate study abroad programs considering IC development. Currently collecting responses. 3.In collaboration with Dr Ramonda, interviews were conducted with students while they were in various countries on their study abroad (in 2020). This was during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the responses offer insights into their experiences. Currently analysing data. Also, a keynote speech on students' perceptions of intercultural education was presented at Chatham University's Education Week and also presented at a guest lecture at Senshu University, Tokyo.
Currently, for each of the above studies, the following is on-going: 1.A manuscript is currently under review with the journal: ICE. I am currently working on revisions. Also, an abstract has been submitted for some of the results for the JALT2021 conference. Some of this data is also being used to additionally publish on the topic of IC competence. 2.Currently, additional data is still being collected/analysed from abroad universities. However, an abstract has been submitted to discuss some of the initial findings at the JALT2021 conference. I am aiming to submit the findings in a relevant journal in late 2021. 3.An abstract has been submitted to co-present the findings with Dr Ramonda at JALT2021. We are also aiming to publish the results in early 2022.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
4: Progress in research has been delayed.
Reason
Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the study significantly, as students have not been able to travel to other countries to complete their study abroad. However, the study has been adapted to look at other elements of IC education and development as listed above (1-3).

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
As the research has been significantly impacted by COVID-19, I have adapted the study to look at similar areas (as the original research plan) but in different ways. Apart from the above outline of on-going work, the following is planned this year in order to recover the delayed schedule: 1. Capture and analyse students' intercultural communicative competencies. The data should be captured in December 2021/January 2022. Analysis of such data will be analysed after that time. 2. Continuing to capture and analyse data from study abroad managers (in Japan and abroad). This should be completed by September 2021. This will involve the already established questionnaire and will be followed up with interviews. By completing these tasks, this should allow me to recover some time lost due to COVID-19, but also shed further light on the original theme of the study (intercultural education and study abroad).

Causes of Carryover |
As I was unable to travel abroad, I have had to reallocate funds in other areas. As such the remaining budget will be used in this coming year.
