Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This year, the researcher was able to meet their project goals by completing the phenomenological analysis of six Japanese university students in Bangkok, Thailand, and disseminating key findings through a research paper in a refereed international journal (TESOL Communications) and at several international conferences, including CamTESOL (February 2023), Thai TESOL (January, 2023), and IALIC 2022 (September, 2022). Key findings that emerged from the study include the identification of textural and structural descriptions, which culminated into an essence of experience, shared by the six participants. Notable elements of this include exposure to English as a Lingua Franca and diversity, especially openness of sexuality. The researcher posits that these findings can be operationalized at the classroom level to better prepare Japanese university students for experiences in the Outer Circle, and especially in major urban hubs, such as Bangkok, Thailand. A direction for future research that emerged from this study involves the role that COIL might play in better preparing Japanese university students for overseas sojourns in the outer circle.
