Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The main purpose of this third year of research was to pursue our investigation of the socio-cultural evolutions of the Ainu of Hokkaido, by studying the resistance and adaptation strategies developed by a famous activist called Nukishio Kizo. We have been leading a translation project in french of his famous manifesto: Remnants and assimilation of the Ainu, writing many complements for this project. This book will be published by the Press of UQAM, Canada this next summer. As it is the first time in history that this book is translated in a foreign language, the Western readers will discover the exceptional testimony of one of the great representatives of the Ainu people so little known wordly.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Thanks to this funding, we were able to obtain essentials books and documents that helped us to investigate this question, closely related to the complexity of japanese identity and the struggles of indigenous peoples of the northern hemisphere. Since the epidemic situation due to the Corona virus did not allow us to continue our field work as planned, this funding was all the more important. It also made possible the translation into Japanese of our article written in French with an introduction of our works by professor Sakurai Norio (「幻想されたアイデンティティ:日本における他性、混血および人種」 and 「分子の1を問い直す―「幻想されたアイデンティティ:日本における他性、混血および人種」解説」). We have also written a complete chronology of Ainu History for another book translation in French of the “Penriuk” by Dobashi Yoshimi (Press of UQAM, Canada).
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Given the regular progress of our investigation despite the difficult epidemic context, we will now be able to begin the last stage of our work. We are now finishing to review the translation of the book, as we are entering the last stage of reviewing the introduction, the biography, the bibliography, and the detailed chronology). We are now waiting for the Press of UQAM to proceed to the first editing of it this summer. We will review the whole manuscript for the publication planned this September (Presses Universitaires du Quebec, Collection Jardin de givre dirigee par Daniel Chartier, Universite du Quebec a Montreal).

Causes of Carryover |
Many of the books I was planning to purchase were not available, so there was an unused amount. The unused amount will be used as translation costs in the next fiscal year.
