Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research examines the effect of formal and informal social capital on the degree of openness in a developing country context. Using the data from the household survey from Ethiopia, I look at how social capital shape the way an individual in a remote agricultural village think about outside matters, including people living in other villages, and imported products. We measure different layers of social capital by asking people's connections with people within the villages, outside villages, politicians and their membership status at different formal associations. We also take account of virtual connections such as social network services.

Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
In the fist year of the project, I have collected data through questionnaire capturing personal characteristics and social ties with people. We also collected data regarding social capital using the means of transportation such as bicycle and communication such as cell phones and social network services. Additionally, through dictator game we let the participants to allocate money between him and the two partners. One partner is from the same village and the other is from another distant village, so we take a difference to measure the openness. The data collection went smooth as planned within the year.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In this year and the following year, we plan to repeat the data collection process in order to construct the two-year panel. Then, we will start data analysis.
