Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the FY2019, the following research activities were accomplished: (1) the survey design and instruments were developed for target respondents in Japan and Mongolia, (2) the survey preparation and training for survey workers were implemented, (3) the survey fieldwork started in Mongolia, targeting households with migrant members in Japan, (4) online survey forms for respondents in Japan has been distributed, and (5) the research implementation plan was redesigned to avoid delays amidst the pandemic. Additionally, it has been agreed with the Central Bank of Mongolia to collaborate on the financial literacy interventions. Currently, online lessons designed to provide financial information on thematic subjects such as sending remittances and managing household budget have been prepared.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak worldwide, the survey fieldwork in Mongolia which started in December 2019 was discontinued in the end of February 2020, as conducting face-to-face interviews became difficult amidst the pandemic. At the time of the fieldwork termination, the survey implementation rate was about 50% of the target sample. Because of the uncertainty presented by the pandemic, it has become necessary to reconsider the survey and experimental designs. In order to prevent from further delays in the research implementation, it has been decided to shift all data collection procedure and financial literacy intervention to an online platform. Currently, online survey forms have been distributed to target respondents in Japan and the data collection has been progressing smoothly.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
As conducting face-to-face interviews has become impossible during the COVID-19 pandemic, the research implementation plan has been re-designed to implement the surveys and interventions through an online platform in the FY2020. Currently, an online survey is being implemented for migrants in Japan. At the same time, the online survey for their household members in Mongolia is currently under preparation. Once the baseline data are collected in both countries, a randomization will be performed for the financial literacy intervention, which will be collaborated with the Central Bank of Mongolia. In order to make the intervention more effective, it is planned to provide the target population with frequent online lessons and materials that would help them to improve their financial literacy.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The reason for the incurring amount is that the survey fieldwork in Mongolia was terminated due to the coronavirus outbreak. The incurring amount will be used for shifting the survey to an online survey platform to collect the necessary data.
