The impact of financial literacy on remittance decisions in transnational households: The case of Mongolian migrants in Japan

This research conducted primary surveys with Mongolian migrants in Japan and their families in Mongolia, revealing their higher financial literacy compared to the general population of countries with similar development. Financial literacy was measured based on financial knowledge, behavior, and attitude, with an average score of 17 out of 21 points. The study identified income, proficiency in the Japanese language, and educational level as key determinants of financial literacy. Surprisingly, financial literacy did not significantly impact the frequency or amount of remittances sent by the migrants. Furthermore, the research highlights that Mongolians exhibit greater financial inclusion with women, educated individuals, and older people being more likely to be financially included.
