Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
1. Presented my paper-in-progress entitled "The Role of Labor Flexibility in the Pursuit of Innovation Strategies by Established Japanese Companies" at the SASE 31st Annual Meeting (New York, New School) on 27-29 June 2019. 2. Completed the data collection for the companies belonging to the Chemical, Pharmaceutical, Electric and Machinery industries. The resulting data-set encompasses 600 companies over the period of 1998-2016. 3. Fitted the statistical models for every industry, performed panel-data regressions and came up with the tentative conclusions. 4. Summarized the preliminary results based on the existing literature and methods. Prepared the parts "Introduction", "Literature Review", "Model" and "Application" for the draft of the article-in-progress.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
1. With the help of my academic advisors I have been able to access the Nikkei NEEDS database and retrieve the corporate financial data. In addition, I have used the IIPパテントデータベース that is freely available for researchers. As a result, I could successfully merge these two data-sets and perform the intended statistical analysis.
2. I have improved and modified my methodology and a research question as a result of the feedback received from the Japanese as well as international professors at the SASE 31st Annual Meeting.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The tentative title of my research topic has changed into "Does Tokyo Stock Exchange appreciate corporate innovations? Role of patents' quality and research productivity". This modification is motivated by the literature review that showed the relevance of this topic and its applicability to Japan. Furthermore, I have all the necessary data to perform this research at this moment.
After completing my article-in-progress, I plan to come back to the original topic ("The Role of Labor Flexibility in the Pursuit of Innovation Strategies by Established Japanese Companies").
A year ago, the data on non-regular employment included the years from 2008 to 2019, while the data on innovations was only until 2015. Nowadays, however, I have an access to a larger combined data-set that would ensure robust results.
