Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
During the second project year, the investigator published three peer-reviewed journal articles. One article was published in Ethnic and Racial Studies, one of the leading international journals in migration research and the other two (one is a co-authored article with the researcher being the first author) in other established migration journals, one with a more European (Journal of Immigrant and Refugee Studies) and one with anpredominantly Asian audience (Asian Pacific Migration Journal). Ideas for the three papers were presented to and discussed with the scholarly community during presentations at four international conferences/symposia (see below for more details). Since the pandemic did not allow to do field work on site the author decided to supplement the data accumulated so far by conducting follow-up interviews via Skype or zoom. The data collected thus forms part of the data on which the conference presentations and journal articles build. Despite the impossibility to meet other scholars in person, the four academic events were successful outreach events for promoting the findings of the project as they were well attended by European, North American, Asian and South American scholars of different scholarly disciplines (e.g. sociology, anthropology, geography, cultural studies, Asian studies, Japanese studies) and numerous academic communities (e.g. International Sociological Association, Association of Asian Studies, German Association for Asian Studies, etc.).

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Due to the ongoing pandemic it was not possible to collect further data in Brazil. That said, skype and zoom follow-up interviews with previous informants, to whom trust and a relationship of continuous updating had been established, helped tremendously to collect more data and verify earlier hypotheses. Thus, despite the reschulding that was necessary, the research has progressed rather well. The three journal articles in particular are a major achievement and the participation of the International Congress of Sociology in Porto Allegre, that was scheduled for 2021 and was postponed to February 2021, was possible since it was an online conference format. Thus, both ongoing work could be discussed and latest findings presented to the academic community and thereby the research outcomes were widely disseminated.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Since projections regarding the pandemic situation cast great doubt that travel will resume before 2022 the researcher does not plan any field trips for 2021. Instead, the researcher has applied for presentation at three international conferences and has received acceptance to all three events, which will be held fully online (Imiscoe (International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion in Europe) in July 2021, European Association of Japanese Studies in August 2021, International Convention of Asian Scholars in August 2021). Furthermore, the researcher plans to apply to the Association of Asian Studies conference which is scheduled to take place face-to-face in spring 2022. Besides disseminating her research outcomes, the researcher has been writing on a book manuscript that contains the major findings of her study. The plan is to present the manuscript to a renown academic publisher by the end of 2022 in order to publish the book before the end of the four-year project. For the creation of the manuscript, the research assistant will help with compiling a bibliography and index, with proofreading, copy-editing and further editorial and formatting tasks.

Causes of Carryover |
As outlined above and in the progress report of fiscal year 2020, the researcher planned to buy a new laptop PC. Since the old one was still fine during the previous project year it will be bought once the performance of the old laptop decreases. Also, given the pandemic travel was not possible and so there were fewer costs for fieldwork and conferences than originally planned. That said, the research assistant has been a valuable assistance that will be increasingly needed in the upcoming two project years in order to sort, organize, analyse, present and publish the findings. Also, with vaccinations progressing the researcher hopes that travel will be possible again from the end of 2021/early 2022 onwards. The budget will then be needed for further follow-up interviews and the for presenting the research findings at international conferences.
