Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the fiscal year 2021, the project advanced further in a considerable way: A final round of follow-up interviews were conducted with participants in Tokyo and in Singapore in spring 2021. AFterwards, the research activities concentrated on writing and the preparation of a book manuscript. A suitable press that could guarantee wide dissemination of the research results was identified and, after a first successful review stage, a contract with Bristol University Press (BUP) was signed. The book is scheduled to be published in late 2022 in BUP's "Global Migration and Social Change Series". Thus, the book promises to have an audience both in Asia, Europe and the US. The book manuscript underwent a double-blinded peer review process and was accordingly revised towards the end of the fiscal year 2021. The research assistant supported the finalization of the typescript. Other important research achievements to mention are a book review, written based on the experiences from collecting data for this project. The review will be published by Social Science Japan Journal, the leading English academic journal in social science Japan research. Furthermore, the researcher convened a workshop on fieldwork in Japan for doctoral students at the university of Zurich. This helps to improve the training of junior scholars in Japan research. Finally, the researcher was invited to present her findings on gendered aspects in the labour market integration at the Asia Days 2022 held at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, an event co-funded by the Asia Society Switzerland.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The pandemic has infected mobility even in 2021. Thus, field research in Brazil was not possible. Instead, the researcher focussed on the connections from previous field work in Singapore and Tokyo and extended the insights from the two comparative cases by conducting follow-up interviews. Besides the above named adjustment was necessary the project has progressed smoothly with the signing of the book contract as described above as a major milestone for the entire project.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The upcoming final year of the project will be used for copy-editing and production of the book in close cooperation with the publisher BUP. The researcher plans to attend conferences as well as online events as to present the research findings. The researcher also plans to write one more academic paper about one aspect of the research which was not included in the book and is currently researching a high-quality academic journal as potential publication outlet.
|
Causes of Carryover |
The incurring amount will mostly be needed for two different uses: The finalization of the book manuscript, including professional copy-editing and proofreading services, will be costly and not be possible to be done by myself since I am not a native English speaker. Also, the attendance of conferences as to disseminate the research results will involve travel and registration costs.
