Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The project has been progressing rather smoothly in the 2019 and according to the initial plan. The questionnaire survey on Europeans living in Japan and their choices of staying or leaving has been prepared in five languages and data collection commenced according to the plan. The data collection for the questionnaire survey is scheduled to continue in the second quarter of the 2020. Interviews with individuals living in Japan started slightly ahead of the schedule and is scheduled to continue throughout the following year as well. The investigator has presented some of the results at two international conferences and other two presentations were already accepted for presentations in the following year. One of the conferences resulted into an international collaboration which compares the experience and integration of the East European migrants in Japan with the case of UK. This ongoing collaboration is planned to bring a co-authored research paper that will be submitted in the second half of the 2020. Despite the widespread limitations on work and everyday life caused by the spread of the COVID-19, the investigator aims to continue with the research according to the initial plan in the 2020. If restrictions will continue to limit possibilities of the face-to-face interviews or fieldwork, online forms of data collection will be used. Similarly, while aiming on-site participation at conferences, the investigator will participate in otherwise inaccessible events online as well and continue the research activities as planned.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The collection of data for the qualitative interviews commenced slightly earlier than initially planned and by the end of the FY2019, interviews with 6 subjects were already conducted. Questionnaire survey was prepared and data collection started before the end of the fiscal year 2019. The data collection will be extended until May or June 2020 according to the initial plan and the preliminary results suggest that a sufficient number of responses can be collected for this survey. Preparations of two manuscripts based partially on the collected data started and papers (or their revisions) should be submitted in the second half of the 2020.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Amidst the spread of the COVID-19 and the consequent counter-measures, it might prove to be difficult conduct interviews and attend conferences as initially planned. Considering these limitations, the plan for the fiscal year 2020 is as follows. The questionnaire survey will be conducted as planned and the data collection should end in the first quarter. The domestic interview survey is planned to continue in the summer. Fieldwork in Europe will be conducted in fall or winter, depending on the easing of travel restrictions. If the condition will not allow for face to face interviews, online forms of data collection (e.g., interviews or questionnaires) will be considered and conducted instead. The investigator plans to attend multiple domestic and international conferences both online and on-site. Presentation was accepted and is planned for at least on one of these conferences (AAS-in-Asia) and the investigator will continue to look for opportunities to present the preliminary results of this project further.
