Project Period (FY) 2019-04-01 – 2023-03-31
Keywordsmigration / skilled migration / Europe / Japan
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The project has been slightly delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic and some of the research activities could not be realized as planned. On the other hand, other research activities were conducted as planned or adapted to the new social situation and limited only slightly.
Particularly, online questionnaire survey progressed as planned and data from more than 300 respondents were collected in the previous year. The domestic interview survey has proceeded more or less according to the plan and additional interviewees were conducted in the FY2020. Most of the interviews were conducted online.
Preliminary results of these surveys were presented on two occasions, publications are being prepared, and one international webinar has been organized in December, 2020. International collaborative research comparing the experience of Eastern Europeans in the UK and Japan has successfully proceeded and the results are expected to be published in 2021.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

Due to restrictions on domestic and foreign travel and other consequences of the coronavirus pandemic, the project was slightly delayed in the following aspects: 1., domestic interview survey was limited, 2., fieldwork abroad had to be suspended until foreign travel will be reasonably possible again, 3., analysis of the questionnaire survey data has been delayed, 4., some of the publications and conference presentations are delayed or postponed.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The domestic interview survey is planned to continue in the FY2021. Due to ongoing travel restrictions and limitations due to pandemic, fieldwork in Europe will most probably not be possible in the following year and the possibilities for online interviews and postponing of the planned survey will be explored.
Further analysis of the questionnaire survey and already collected interview data is planned for the following year. Results are planned to be presented at an international conference in the summer 2021 (postponed from 2020) and other venues for presentation will be considered as well. Publication of research papers in the following year is planned.

Causes of Carryover

Due to travel limitations, fieldwork both abroad and within Japan could not be realized according to the initial plan. The expenditures planned for travel and realization of the fieldwork in the FY2020 will be used for fieldwork (if possible) in 2021 and to explore other possibilities of conducting this research project.
