Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The project is slightly delayed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and some of the research activities could not be realized as planned. At the same time, some research activities could be restarted and the expected results of the project should be achieved. In particular, the domestic fieldwork and interview survey have continued in 2021 and most of the qualitative data from domestic survey could be collected by the end of the 2021. While the pandemic situation did not allow to conduct all interviews face-to-face and more extensive domestic fieldwork, actual fieldwork and face-to-face interviews became also possible in the second part of the year and brought valuable data. The oversees survey in Europe could not be conducted in 2021 as initially planned, yet with the easing travel restrictions, the fieldwork in Europe can be conducted in FY 2022. The necessary preparations for the fieldwork were successfully finished by the end of the FY2021. Results from the domestic qualitative survey were partially analyzed in collaboration with foreign researchers and published as an open access journal article (Comparative Migration Studies), and other preliminary results were presented at an international conference (European Association for Japanese Studies Conference).

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Mainly due to the Covid 19 pandemic, travel restrictions and everyday effects of the pandemic on researchers, the following aspects of the project has been particularly delayed: 1. the planned long-term fieldwork has been postponed and started one year later than planned, 2. publication process of some of the research results in edited volumes is still being delayed
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the FY2022, the first goal is to conduct fieldwork and interviews in Europe among individuals with a previous experience of living in Japan. As the data from quantitative survey and domestic interview survey are already available and analysis results are being summarized, the next goal is to prepare publications of the partial findings. Furthermore, results will be presented at international conferences mainly in Europe. Finally, the aim of is to increase collaboration with experts in the fields of skilled migration and whiteness studies based in Europe in order to adavance current project and possible further collaboration.

Causes of Carryover |
Planned overseas fieldwork and interview survey was not possible due to pandemic situation and travel restrictions. The fieldwork and interview survey will be conducted in FY2022.
